Requirements for all students earning the M.A. in Philosophy: Master’s thesis and 30 credit hours of study

Core courses (12 credit hours)

  • Seminar in the History of Philosophy (Phil 510)
  • Seminar in Ethical Theory (Phil 520)
  • Two of:
    • Seminar in Metaphysics (Phil 522)
    • Seminar in Epistemology (Phil 524)
    • Advanced Logic (Phil 501)

Electives (12 credit hours)

  • At least 9 of these hours must be in letter-graded coursework.
  • Up to 3 of these hours may be in Special Projects or Independent Study.
  • Up to 6 of these hours may be in 400-level coursework within the Department of Philosophy.
  • Up to 6 of these 12 hours may be in coursework in other departments, when it is appropriate to the student's concentration and approved by the student's advisor.

Masters Thesis Research, Phil 700 (6 credit hours)

Successful preparation and defense of the Master’s thesis

Additional requirements for students choosing the Ethics Option, administered by the Department of Philosophy, Washington State University:

The thesis topic must be in ethics and at least 15 hours of graded coursework must be in ethics or other normative theory courses such as Seminar in Ethical Theory, Advanced Biomedical Ethics, Seminar in Business Ethics, Environmental Philosophy, and Religion and Environment, or other courses judged appropriate by the student's committee.

Additional requirements for students choosing the Environmental Philosophy Option, administered by the Department of Philosophy, the University of Idaho:

The thesis topic must be in environmental philosophy and at least 15 hours of graded coursework must be in environmental courses such as Environmental Philosophy, Religion and Environment, and Ecological Jurisprudence, or other courses judged appropriate by the student's committee.
